For over twenty five years Spoon has been one of the most reliable bands in rock and roll, never repeating themselves and maintaining a unique sound that has never been compromised. On their tenth album “Lucifer on the Sofa” they continue that dependability, achieving the rare feat of paying tribute to their influences while never letting on what those influences are.

The new album is steeped in the sound of a band getting back to the basics, frontman Britt Daniel has returned to live in his hometown of Austin, Texas and the gritty, smokey amabience of the clubs they’ve played there is transferred to the edgy groove of the album’s ten songs.

The core nucleus of the band has been Daniel and drummer Jim Eno. Their constant presence has defined Spoon and keeps this album on track. The shivery piano mixed with cutting guitars riffs over the top of Eno’s chugging rhythm perfectly augment Daniels’ sandpaper vocals.

Spoon is a rare breed, a band that is still engaged in moving rock and roll forward in an age when many have given up on the genre. Lucifer on the sofa shows their willingness to continue to bring a fresh approach to a classic brand and should be savored.
