Each year during the WHRO Public Media Spelling Bee students fill our television studio and nervously wait for the competition to begin. These young champions have already won their school spelling bees. Now they are going to compete for the chance to represent our area in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. This year's competition includes 50 spellers.

The WHRO Spelling Bee helps students improve their spelling, increase their vocabulary, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives. In addition to the academic benefits, students also develop important life skills – like goal setting, time management and public speaking – that will help them as they advance in school and eventually to successful careers.

You can watch the competition get underway at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 6 on WHRO TV 15. You can also stream it live online.

Join us for an exciting afternoon!
