It’s April. I should be in the press box in Scope, leaning into a microphone and exhorting 6,000 people to applaud a mass of bagpipers at The Tattoo. The Sandler Center should be packed for a Symphonicity concert. The Williamsburg Winery should be stuffed with chamber music enthusiasts waiting to hear Beethoven and Schumann.

Shots are going into arms, and music is flying over the airwaves of WHRO FM and WHRV FM as we virtually bring to lovers of great music the soul-nourishing sounds of great masters who defy time and pandemics. While it’s been interesting to co-host concerts by the Virginia Symphony and Symphonicity, I would much rather be comfortably seated in a good concert venue hearing in real time what we send out digitally each day from our broadcasting/streaming outlets.

We face the reality of a long battle against an invisible enemy that knows no bounds, but we fight back in our own way. We let Wayla, Dwight and Rebecca beam out the Mozart, we let Jae Sinnett drum out disease with great jazz and learned commentary, we let Paul Shugrue stay Out of the Box as we work to put COVID-19 back in a box for good, and we let Barbara, Cathy and Lisa keep us connected with our radio fans who want information as well as artistry.

We’ll hold the fort until the virus is vanquished and those concert halls are filled again! Join us on the air, or listen online to WHRO FM and WHRV FM.
