As I write this, it seems a vaccine is close to being ready, and I hope 2021 will be a much better year. At WHRO Public Media, we are thrilled to start this new year as we have many exciting things planned.
Curate, our program showcasing local artists, is back in production and will premiere Friday, January 29, at 8:30 p.m. You’ll meet artists from Hampton Roads and from across the nation. The program started in 2015 and has won several awards through the years.
Speaking of great television programs, this month is packed with an exciting mix of new shows and some returning fan favorites. This year marks the 50-year anniversary of Masterpiece as the longestrunning primetime drama series on TV. To celebrate they have a great lineup planned including Elizabeth is Missing (January 3, 9 p.m.), All Creatures Great and Small (January 10, 9 p.m.), Miss Scarlet & The Duke (January 17, 9 p.m.) and The Long Song (January, 31, 10 p.m.)
WHRO also continues to explore opportunities to contribute to the national dialogue around race and racism in America. WHRO TV and WHRV have teamed up to select and provide a lineup of several relevant programs for the coming months that share Black history and celebrate the Black culture. These programs are airing Sundays at 2 p.m. and will continue through March 28. This month’s offerings include shows about Sammy Davis, Jr., Lorraine Hansberry and more.
And next month we will hold a cherished event that is a favorite among both staff and members—the annual spelling bee. Each year, students compete here in the regional spelling bee to win a spot at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the spring. There is no doubt our regional competition will look different this year, but we are excited that it is still happening. My team is working through all the details now, but you can rest assured we will do all we can to ensure a memorable and fun experience for local students. As plans unfold, we will post updates at whro.org/spellingbee
That’s a lot of great programs and events, and it’s only the first month of the year! As excited as I am about this upcoming year, I know none of our work would be possible without your generosity. From our local journalism efforts and sensational music on our radio stations to all of the work we do in the field of education to help local teachers and students, it is only through your support that we are able to offer these services. Thank you for your faithfulness throughout 2020. Together we will make 2021 even more of a year to remember. Thank you, and Happy New Year!
