The Bread Collectors: Out of the Box Emerging Artist Series

The Bread Collectors: Out of the Box Emerging Artist Series

Join us every Thursday at the Sandler Center from January 9 through March 6* for a FREE concert by one of Hampton Roads' best local bands, hosted live by WHRO's Paul Shugrue!

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
The Bread Collectors deliver a delightfully heady sound not commonly heard in the Tidewater area. It all began in early 2021 as nothing more than a studio project initiated for the sole purpose of remaining musically occupied during the height of the Pandemic.

Hunkered down in the newly built Sofva Sound studio space, headquartered in the sleepy beachside community of Ocean View, the duo consisting of bassist Micah Kaplan and led by Sofva house Engineer/Producer Joe Welch, began a regimen of weekly recording sessions to capture at least one new idea every week with an end goal of developing those ideas into fully realized pieces over time.

Gradually, the two began extending collaboration invites to various musician friends and acquaintances from the region (and beyond), constructing the framework for the ever-growing collective of musicians that would appear throughout their three-part series of cinematic “Episodes”. Released on cassette between 2022 and 2023 and utilizing a palette of sounds fusing elements of Dub, World, Funk, and Soul slathered in a psychedelic rock haze, these carefully crafted compositions would in part earn the group a prestigious VEER award in early 2024 falling under the “Best Psychedelic Music” category.

After 3 years of amassing an impressive catalog of released and unreleased music, an invitation to perform at the 2024 Spring Stockley Arts Festival spurred the pair on to assemble the definitive LIVE version of The Bread Collectors, marking their debut within the vibrant and ever-expanding NFK music scene upon which they are sure to leave an indelible albeit smoky impression.

October 31 marked the release of their first new music of 2024, with the single “The Heart Wants,” a composition brought forth by fellow live band member Matt Katherman, a smooth Neo-Soul excursion featuring both soaring electric and jazzy clean guitar leads punctuated by the fiery Hammond B3 work of Nashville’s own Tim McDonald.
