Pickin' on WHRV this week features a famed musical duo from North Carolina: Don Reno and Red Smiley emerged as one of the pivotal first-generation bluegrass stars who helped to shape the genre. Don Reno played with Bill Monroe before teaming with Smiley to begin recording in 1951. They were popular especially throughout the Southeast before splitting up in the late 60s. They teamed together for a final legendary release in 1971 entitled “Together Again.” Sadly, Red Smiley would pass away less than a year later. We’ll hear several selections from them. Also, music from the Stanley Brothers, The Country Gentlemen, and regional bands Code Blue and Josh Grigsby and County Line. It’s a packed Pickin', Sunday night at 7 on WHRV. You can also listen on-demand anytime.
