S. Carey is best known as keyboardist and percussionist for Bon Iver but on his third solo album “Hundred Acres” he has simplified his instrumentation in order to emulate the lyrics of these songs about simplicity and the power of nature.

Carey’s skill as an arranger makes the interplay between his acoustic instruments, guitars and strings, and his electronics sounds so smooth and these environmentally related songs sound like they were recorded in a forest clearing.

The album acts as a musical escape hatch to an idyllic and hushed place with it’s understated string arrangements, chamber folk guitar and vocals building to dramatic, sweeping flourishes.

Carey has commented that his songwriting for "Hundred Acres" was an effort “to reach for the utopia of simplicity, for daily life to be undburdened of anxiety and tethered by love.” Whether he achieves that stage doesn’t matter, his ambition is what sets this album apart.
