In June of 2017, WHRV hosted the first Writer’s Block, an initiative that features local poets, authors, and story tellers joining musicians in presenting their original work before a live audience for future broadcast and podcast. From across the region these artists, many who have never before presented their work in public,  have joined us each month in various venues – from the Norfolk Community Farm Market to the WHRO Teleconference Center – to Zeiders American Dream Theatre, each filled with listeners being taken on a journey of literary and musical discovery. The featured musicians, many with national touring behind them, have enthralled the audiences with their own story telling performances. The October Writer’s Block expanded to feature student authors presenting their work to an audience of over 200 at Norfolk’s Larchmont Elementary School.

After months of tapings and editing, producers Kathy Martin and Barry Graham will debut Writer’s Block, Sunday, January 21, 11 a.m. on WHRV 89.5 FM. The one-hour program will air every third Sunday and will feature stories curated from the live performances. Thanks to the generous support of our listeners, the incredibly talented literary and musical artists of Southeastern Virginia will showcase their work on-air during this program and online in a new podcast where you can listen to all the performances.
