The roots of country music go back for centuries. And, while we think of country music as a distinctly American generated genre, it in fact is a hybrid of staunch English, Scottish, Irish and African influences. Music that once was relegated to rural regions of the nation, instead today is a staple of radio playlists everywhere. The net is wide with artists and styles - from classic artists at the relative birth of the genre in the 1920s and 30s to today’s crossover pop acts that somehow shakes it from its very traditional sound.

This Sunday evening, we begin a multi week exploration into the singers and musicians, many sadly forgotten, who helped to define country music.

Regardless of the artists that you follow and enjoy, there is something for everyone in country music. Tune in to the Acoustic Highway for “Classic Country” Sunday at 9:00 p.m. on WHRV FM.
