As part of WHRO’s American Graduate: Getting to Work initiative, this week Educationally Speaking looks at the issue of computer science classes in both high schools and colleges. In college, most students in computer science classes are not taking the course as a major, but as an elective. This presents challenges to instructors who must create a curriculum which is both challenging and useful, yet does not discourage students from taking the class. High school teachers must deal with standards of learning and lack of computer literacy in lower feeder grades. Further, teachers in other disciplines often lack the knowledge for integrating computer technology into their lessons. Jon Yager from Virginia Beach Public Schools and Cindy Fry from Baylor University are featured.
