Trampled by Turtles have always had a subdued approach to bluegrass, the Minnesota band has released their 10th album “Aplenglow” and like the title suggests the music takes on the sound of the reddish haze that blankets the mountains at dawn and dusk.

Jeff Tweedy of Wilco has been brought in as the band’s first outside producer and rather than try to change their signature sound, they even do one of his songs.

The songs and tempos fluctuate between melancholy pessimism and upbeat optimism as the layered harmonies and stripped down banjo, guitar and mandolin provide the perfect framing to the lyric’s meaning.

For almost twenty years Trampled by Turtles have been honing their craft and on their tenth album it all comes together. Although the “Aplenglow” of the title is a temporary thing, these songs have much more staying power.
