In the 1970s, second generation musicians like JD Crowe, Tony Rice, and Ricky Skaggs began experimenting with the traditional bluegrass sound by recording folk artists such as Ian Tyson and Gordon Lightfoot’s music. Artists like Tony Rice had been fans of folk music for years and purists of the genre had hardly any reason to embrace such a radical approach. What emerged was the now infamous album by JD Crowe and the New South that is simply referred to by its catalog number Rounder 0044. Many consider it the greatest bluegrass release ever. Tony Rice would go on to release an album of Gordon Lightfoot’s songs which helped to further blur the lines between traditional and progressive bluegrass.
