Sunday night’s Acoustic Highway features another icon of the 1970s—Harry Chapin. He emerged in the early 1970s with a string of crossover pop hits including the song "Taxi" which at almost seven minutes in length, should have been shunned by radio stations. Instead, it became a major hit and launched Chapin to major stardom. His 1976 album Greatest Stories Live sold over 2 million copies and firmly cemented him as one of the most popular singers of the decade. Harry Chapin would also devote himself to several social causes and was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to a commission on World Hunger. Chapin’s sudden death in 1981 left behind a legion of fans and a legacy as a talented singer-songwriter. The music of Harry Chapin, who I saw at Norfolk’s Premier Theatre (now called the Roper) in Downtown Norfolk in 1980 and is one of my best memories of seeing a concert while in college.
