The title of Florence and the Machine’s fifth album “Dance Fever” refers to a 14th century ritual where groups of people burst into dance frenzies to the point of exhaustion or even death It’s that type of mythology that has inspired this gothic, extravagant and magnificent album.

The indie rock “it” producer Jack Antanoff understands Florence Welch’s vision enough to push for even more splendor than her previous albums. Sparkling production, a pounding beat, and a gospel-sized chorus are aligned with melodic folk rock sensebilities, the perfect match for Welch’s emotionalism.

Songs of female empowerment strut and careen throughout and are used to examine her own psyche.

Floence + the Machnine’s "Dance Fever" uses the pandemic as a muse to bring us out of a dark period and into the light. But like many old folk tales of the 14th century that inspire it, be careful what you wish for.
