Bona fide rock and roll albums are getting fewer and farther between so you have to savor the great ones when they come along, like Foo Fighters’ "Medicine at Midnight." Their 10th album, it’s one of their most consistant and likeable since their early days.

If leader Dave Grohl seems rejuvenated on the lead off track it might have to do with his teenage daughter, Violet doing the background vocals. Or it might a back to basics energy that carries over to the whole album

Grohl says the album was ready for release before the pandemic hit and had to be delayed because they couldn’t tour. It’s easy to imagine  some of those trademark arena sing-alongs for these upbeat and positive songs.

At this stage in their history, Foo Fighters aren’t competing with anyone but themselves and “Medicine at Midnight” is the work of a band that is comfortable with their sound and looking to keep rockin’ without a lot of bells and whistles. They aren’t trying to re-invent rock but are doing a great job of carrying it on.
