On this week’s Pickin' on WHRV, we feature the first in a three-part series celebrating the February birthday of the iconic Ralph Stanley. Carter Stanley died in 1966 bringing the famed brother duo act to an end. Ralph Stanley decided to continue with his band called the Clinch Mountain Boys and before signing with the noted Rebel Records in 1971, he recorded a series of albums for several small labels including King and Gusto. Once signed with Rebel, Stanley emerged as the leading savior of sound for traditional mountain music. The years preceding the Rebel contract found Stanley trying to find his artistic footing. This week, in honor of Ralph Stanley, born February 25, 1927 in McClure, Virginia, Pickin' features a program entitled “Poor Rambler.” Tune in Sunday at 7:00 p.m. to hear one of the most distinctive and legendary voices in Bluegrass music.
