JD Crowe and the New South

This week, Pickin' on WHRV revisits Bluegrass in the 1970s. The music had a revival due in large part to two blockbuster movie soundtracks, Bonnie and Clyde and Deliverance which brought an awareness of the music to a larger audience. Bluegrass festivals saw a resurgence, and longtime artists like Ralph Stanley, Bill Monroe, and Mac Wiseman saw a renewed interest in their careers. New artists like The Bluegrass Cardinals and JD Crowe and the New South also found success. Further, Rounder Records, a label devoted to traditional Roots Music, was founded in 1970 and soon released an album by noted Bluegrass musician Joe Val. They soon became a major distributor of traditional and progressive Bluegrass music. It wasn’t all Disco, the 1970s were a hotbed of great Bluegrass Music. Tune in Sunday night at 7:00 and listen back to a great decade of Bluegrass music.
