My Morning Jacket’s first album in five years comes with a caveat, it was recorded five years ago. "The Waterfall II" was recorded at the same time as their last album "The Waterfall" and since that time Jim James, the band’s leader has recorded five solo albums.  If nothing else, the new album signals that the band is not yet over and acts as a musical time capsule after five years on the shelf.

James says of the decision to release The Waterfall II now, “Like many of us in this crazy time I have been reflecting, …I took a hike out in the mountains with the 2nd half of The Waterfall one day and I just fell in love with it all over again.”

"The Waterfall II" puts the spotlight on My Morning Jacket’s trademark eclecticism with acoustic arrangements, ramshackle jams, spaced-out country and heavenly psychedelia, it’s emotions running the gambit from devastation to overwhelming gratitude to open eyed wonder.

When these tracks were originally recorded, “The Waterfall” was being planned as a triple album. It might be easy to label these songs as leftovers or b-sides but in this upside down world “The Waterfall II” might just be even better than it’s predecessor. In a time when everything is unprecedented thats not such a hard concept to grasp.
