J.P. Holland is no stranger to the labyrinthine world of military benefits and coverage. He’s a Navy veteran and, for a time, was stationed at Naval Air Station Norfolk.

Now, he’s the CEO of Johns Hopkins Health Plans, the insurance arm of the famed Maryland medical center.

Earlier this year, the group expanded to Virginia, giving more options for military members here in Hampton Roads that will cater to their specific needs.

“So knowing who to call for what, how to orchestrate care for your family, especially when you experience some sort of health care challenge,” Holland said.

“...That's where the U.S. Family Health Plan can really help.”

Johns Hopkins’ insurance provider, based in Maryland, has about 470,000 members. But expanding to Hampton Roads means a renewed focus on the military for the company.

The U.S. Family Health Plan offers TRICARE Prime benefits, and active-duty members pay no enrollment fees or out-of-pocket costs for in-network care.

“At the end of the day, we want to see better health outcomes for our members and optimal member experience,” Holland said.

“It's hard, it’s challenging, navigating health care. And if we can help in that navigation, it's something that's very core to our mission.”
