Local school districts across Hampton Roads are providing students with free meals while public schools are closed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. 

Many students in the region are food insecure and normally rely on free-or-reduced breakfasts and lunches at school. 

Virginia has received a federal waiver allowing schools to serve food in non-congregate settings to help limit interactions between people. Schools are also benefitting from funding from the Summer Meals Program, which helps ensure that children continue to receive nutritious meals while school is out of sessioin. 

Here's where students can find food during the school closures: 

Chesapeake

Six schools will provide "grab-n-go" breakfasts and lunches. The meals will be available Monday through Friday on the student bus ramps. They're for anyone 18 years old or younger. Students must be present to receive meals. Delivery locations are organized by time.

Hampton City Schools will offer two packaged meals per day to anyone 18 years old or younger Monday-Friday, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Poquoson City Public Schools will provide bagged meal breakfast and lunch to all Poquoson children 18 years old and under as well as students with special needs 21 years old and under. This includes children under five who are not yet enrolled in school. The times vary by location. Service days will be Mondays and Wednesdays and meals will be delivered by school buses. The meals will include breakfast and lunch for the entire week, Monday through Friday. Portsmouth Public Schools will serve lunch for any child 18 years old and younger. The service will continue each weekday from 10 a.m. to noon for breakfast and lunch.

Williamsburg James City County Public Schools is providing two days' worth of breakfast and lunch from 8 to 10 a.m. Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays. Williamsburg Area Transit Authority (WATA) will provide free rides to and from these school locations to allow families to receive "grab-n-go" meals. Students must be present for families to pick up a meal.

Free transportation to the Magruder Elementary site is available through Williamsburg Area Transit Authority (WATA).
