Wednesday marks four years since the mass shooting at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center.
A candlelight vigil in front of the new City Hall will honor the 12 victims of the shooting. It’s at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
A longtime employee opened fire at the building on May 31, 2019. He ultimately killed 11 other city employees and another Virginia Beach resident before being shot and killed by police.
In a release, the city said the vigil would include a candle ceremony and a musical performance by students from Virginia Beach City Public Schools.
The city is asking people to wear blue for remembrance. Virginia Beach is also planning to observe a moment of silence at 4:06 p.m, when the first 911 call came in from Building 2.
Mayor Bobby Dyer of Virginia Beach and Governor Glenn Youngkin have both ordered flags to be flown half-staff May 31. Youngkin also named May 31 Virginia Beach Remembrance Day.
