Each year WHRO welcomes some of the area’s most creative minds into our studio for the annual Young Storytellers Awards Ceremony. Each child is honored at the special reception and recorded in the WHRO television studio reading their winning entry.

Several weeks before the awards ceremony, our Blue Ribbon panel takes on the task of reading and scoring all of the entries written by local students in kindergarten through fifth grade. “It was a privilege to see the works of so many talented youth from across the region,” said Asa Heyward, a Teen Services Librarian/Volunteer Coordinator at Suffolk Public Library and one of our Blue Ribbon Panel Judges. The stories were judged on originality, creative expression, storytelling and integration of illustrations.

“‘You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have,’ is my favorite Maya Angelou quote,” said Ms. Carolyn Harris, a teacher at Carver Elementary in Newport News. “I love WHRO and the opportunities and resources provided to my students. As a teacher with her third writer contest winner, I am thrilled beyond words.”
