WHRO Education has been on the move! As you know, their Children’s Services' Department is dedicated to promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM); literacy; computer technology; and children's programming. Education Specialist, Rosalie Rodriguez, recently participated in three STEM events on the Hampton Roads’ Southside.

The STEM events took place in Norfolk and Suffolk. Two Norfolk Public Schools elementary schools -- Ocean Air Elementary School and Sewells Point Elementary School  hosted Math and Science Nights on January 24 and January 26, respectively. WHRO was there to engage the students with fun activities that emphasized math and science skills and allowed the children to show their creativity. On January 28, Suffolk Public Library’s North Suffolk Public Library hosted The Big Idea Fair. This collection of workshops, contests, and hands-on activities allowed participants to create, design, build, and explore.

Over 300 children participated in WHRO Education's make-and-take project at these events. The children were made "agents" and sent on an Odd Squad Mission. Their mission was to invent a gadget that would help fix WHRO’s towers, which had trouble receiving signals from PBS to air their popular PBS KIDS programs. In addition, each child received WHRO and PBS KIDS flyers and activity books.
