From the CEO - Winter 2025

The start of a new year is always an exciting time around the station. As you know, WHRO Public Media was founded for the purpose of education. Our station was formed as Virginia’s first non-commercial, educational television station that brought televised teaching into our region’s classrooms. We are also the only public broadcasting station in the United States owned by a collaboration of 21 local public school districts.

Since education is at the heart of everything we do, our station supports educators and students in numerous ways, including creating content that teachers can use in the classroom, providing professional development courses, developing online courses, and visiting schools and libraries to present educational programs.

One of my favorite ways we serve local students is by offering three annual competitions that let them test their abilities and grow their skills. Our annual PBS Kids Writers Contest opens for entries this month. It is the 30th anniversary of this exciting event. Learn how to enter at whro.org/writerscontest The Great Computer Challenge takes place each year in March (senior competition) and May (junior competition). Also in the spring, our annual spelling bee determines the regional winner who will represent our area at the national event. This year, we welcome TowneBank as a new partner for the bee. You can watch the TowneBank Spelling Bee on Saturday, April 5, on WHRO TV 15.

Speaking of great programs to watch, Curate 757 returned this month to our online platforms. Each episode dives deep into the unique stories, inspirations, and creative journeys of local artists. This is the ninth season for the program, and I can’t wait for you to see the lineup of incredibly talented artists from across our community. The series will stream on whro.org/curate, YouTube, and Facebook. Visit whro.org/curate to watch any episodes you’ve missed.

Another series that showcases local talent is the Out of the Box Concert Series at the Sandler Center hosted by Paul Shugrue. Join us on Thursdays for a free concert by one of Hampton Roads’ best local bands. Visit whro.org/events to see the lineup along with all the other great events we will be offering throughout the year.

Last year was a great year for WHRO, and I believe 2025 will be even better. It is only possible through your generous support. Thank you for being a member of WHRO!
