From the CEO - March 2022

Our annual spelling bee was held on February 19. In this month's issue, you can meet all of these champion spellers. Congratulations to each of them for winning their school competitions!

Another exciting competition happening right now is our Young Storytellers Contest. This annual PBS Kids Writers Contest calls for children in grades K-5 to write their own original story, poem or non-fiction piece and illustrate it. I can't wait to read this year's stories! Entries must be postmarked by March 25. For details, visit whro.org/writerscontest

Also coming up soon is the 37th Annual Great Computer Challenge. Categories include CAD, Cybersecurity, Desktop Presentations, Desktop Publishing, Graphic Design, Integrated Applications, Internet Scavenger Hunt, Scientific/Non- Business Programming, Object Oriented Programming, Visual Programming/Block Coding and Web Design. Good luck to everyone who is competing!

We've heard from many of you that you are enjoying Time Machine Radio Network, our newest radio station. I'm excited about a new segment that has started airing there. Four times each weekday, host Paul Shugrue brings you Today in Rock History on 88.7 WFOS. As one of Virginia's leading experts on rock and music history, Paul takes listeners on an engaging 60-second journey through time—full of factoids, historical moments, and the sounds that shaped musical history for today's date. You can hear this new feature at 7:05 a.m., 11:05 a.m., 2:05 p.m., and 7:05 p.m. on The Time Machine Radio Network.

Speaking of great music, we have two concerts left in the Sandler Center's Out of the Box Emerging Artist Series. Join us March 3 & 10 for live music from the region's best acts. Visit whro.org/events for details.

We also have the return of two great dramas this month. Call the Midwife returns with season 11 on March 20. With powerful stories of the nurses, midwives, and nuns from Nonnatus House in post-World War II London, the series is a moving and intimate insight into the colorful world of midwifery. Also on March 20, the fan-favorite drama inspired by Jane Austen's final, unfinished novel is back! After the season one finale of Sanditon left viewers hanging in suspense, the story continues with its high-spirited heroine, Charlotte Heywood, returning to the picturesque coastal resort of Sanditon.

Looking ahead a couple months, I'm excited to announce that we have air dates for the episodes of Antiques Roadshow that were taped in Williamsburg! Tune in Monday nights on May 2, May 9 and May 16 to see what treasures producers found right here in our own backyard!

Take care, and have a great month!
