Cooler temperatures, football and changing leaves—I always look forward to this time of the year. We have a lot of exciting things happening at WHRO Public Media this month.
First, I hope you will bring your children and grandchildren out to the Virginia Children’s Festival in Town Point Park in downtown Norfolk. The festival takes place Saturday, Oct. 2, from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. As always, members of our WHRO Education team will be there offering lots of fun and prizes for the kiddos.
The Children’s Festival is a great event that we enjoy sponsoring every year. It offers fun for the whole family with more than 100 creative and interactive activities that include storytelling, hands- on workshops, educational displays, cultural experiences, arts and crafts, military demonstrations, costumed characters and more! I hope we’ll see you there! Learn more at whro.org/events
Another exciting offering this month is the return of our Curate series. Season 6 of this popular arts program begins Friday, Oct. 29, at 8:30 p.m. You can read all about the new season on page 10.
Masterpiece is marking its 50th anniversary as the longest-running primetime drama series on TV this year! Fans can enjoy new seasons of some of their favorites this month, including Call the Midwife, Season 10 (Oct. 3, 8 p.m.), Grantchester, Season 6 (Oct. 3, 9 p.m.), and Baptiste, Season 2 (Oct. 17, 10 p.m.).
We also finish out Hispanic Heritage Month with the 34th Hispanic Heritage Awards to be broadcast and streamed on Friday, Oct. 8, at 9 p.m. This historic program is among the highest honors by Latinos and for Latinos.
Lastly, I’d like to mention The WHRO Voice, our audio reading service for individuals who are legally blind, have a reading disability, or prefer to listen to their local daily newspaper or other written material. Throughout the pandemic, some of our faithful volunteers have kept this crucial service going by recording in their homes. The program they record, The WHRO Voice Local Newsstand, features local news highlights from The Virginian- Pilot, Daily Press, The Suffolk News- Herald, The Virginia Gazette, The Hampton Roads Business Journal and more.
The WHRO Voice can be heard via specially modified radios, through smart speakers, or through the WHRO App. You can also listen, and find the program's weekly schedule, at whro.org/voice
Thank you to our faithful volunteers who support this service! It is just one more way we are able to deliver top-notch news and information to our community. Enjoy the fall!
