Democracy at Work

Discover the Unsung Heroes of Democracy With A New Exhibit!

In a year dominated by political turmoil, it's easy to overlook the dedicated individuals who keep our democracy thriving — our public servants.

For a limited time only, the “Democracy At Work” exhibit is available for free to public libraries and schools across Virginia.

This captivating photo gallery celebrates the remarkable stories of men and women devoted to community and public service, whether as tireless volunteers or committed government workers.

These heroes, often unappreciated and underpaid, choose public service out of a deep belief in its mission. Their stories reveal how they uphold the fundamental principles of democracy, including:

  • Ensuring free and fair elections
  • Upholding the right to representation in criminal trials
  • Protecting our country from threats, both foreign and domestic
  • Providing proper care for veterans
  • Safeguarding clean air and water
  • Providing independent journalism to hold the powerful accountable

Bring these inspiring stories to your community and shine a light on the unsung heroes who make democracy possible.

Some of the compelling profiles include:

  • Richard Walker: An ex-felon from Richmond who assists recently released felons in restoring their voting rights.
  • Laura Mollo: A courageous citizen who used the Freedom of Information Act to expose corruption in her small town, leading to significant government reform.
  • Rear Adm. (ret.) Ann Philips: Former leader of Virginia’s coastal resilience master plan and current federal administrator for the Department of Transportation Maritime Administration.

This easy-to-install inspirational gallery can be adjusted to your program needs.

Gallery profiles are printed on 10-12 broadsheet newsprint pages that can be easily hung wherever there is space. Tack them to a bulletin board for a low-maintenance display, or frame the profiles to create a more polished look.

Make the exhibit even more engaging by:

  • Incorporating it into a larger exhibit on democracy or public service
  • Curating books on democracy or related topics to display as part of the exhibit
  • Inviting community members to share stories of their own public service heroes on social media and tag your location

The "Democracy At Work" exhibit will be delivered to participating venues in October.

Presented by the Virginia Center for Investigative Journalism at WHRO Public Media, this enthralling exhibit is sure to captivate your community. WHRO will amplify your location’s hosting with extensive promotion across its audio and digital platforms.

Don’t miss out on this exclusive opportunity — space is limited and spots are filling up fast! Deadline to sign up is Friday, Sept. 13, or until all exhibits have been claimed.
