Parents and grandparents it is time to encourage your children/grandchildren to enter the 2016 WHRO PBS KIDS Writers Contest, which is currently underway!

Children in grades K-5 are asked to develop their own original stories accompanied with personal illustrations.  They will compete with their peers throughout eastern Virginia. Stories are judged on:  originality, creative expression, storytelling, and integration of illustrations.  The entry form and contest rules can be found at: http://education.whro.org/regional-services/for-schools/writers-contest

In 2015, WHRO received over 450 entries. Last year’s winners created stories that were based on fact and fiction, truly using their imaginations. Storylines were written about cupcakes, animals, food, bubbles, a mermaid, a snowman, space, and so much more! Winner’s stories are mounted and hang in the WHRO hallways for a year.

In addition, winners and their families are invited to WHRO for a special reception in their honor and the annual WHRO Young Storytellers Awards Show is recorded in the studio.  Visit http://education.whro.org/regional-services/for-schools/writers-contest/2015-writers-contest-winners to view the Award Show featuring interviews with last year’s winners.

The Contest promotes a unique, fun, and creative way for children to express their gifts, talents, and ideas in the form of writing and art.  The Contest also helps develop 21st Century Skills, including:  critical thinking, personal initiative, effective written communication, curiosity, and imagination.

Entries must be postmarked by Friday, March 25th. All students participating are winners! Each student entering the contest receives a special PBS KIDS Certificate. One first and second place/honorable mention winner will be chosen from each grade level and receive cash prizes along with the reception in their honor.  Winners will be notified by the end of April.

WHRO appreciates your encouragement in helping to get your children involved with the 2016 PBS KIDS Writers Contest!
