Did you know that STEM careers make up 10 of 14 of the fastest growing industries in the United States. Of those, less than one in three of the jobs are held by a woman. Though efforts to expose young women to opportunities in STEM have increased, the statistics of women in science, technology, engineering, and math fields remain at a low.

On HearSay with Cathy Lewis, the new Dean of Old Dominion University’s Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology, Stephanie Adams, weighed in on this issue along with Ruthe Farmer, the Senior Policy Advisor for Tech Inclusion at the White House. As they and other leading women in STEM discussed this dilemma, they suggested ways to increase efforts of encouraging and retaining young girls’ interest to enter the STEM field. The guests and other callers also examined the way society sees engineers and scientists, how they view women in these roles, and what exactly the environment is like for women in the workplace.
