Meet out second batch of talented interns here at WHRO! These young men and women have joined us for the summer to work in radio production and on our WHRO Education team.

Meet Avery Evans, production intern for “HearSay with Cathy Lewis.” Avery is a rising junior at McGill University, where he studies English and communication. Avery, who has always enjoyed WHRO programming, applied for an internship to learn more about radio and TV production. With interests in writing and producing comedy and news, Avery believes interning at WHRO has given him a solid foundation in everything from research to working with a live studio camera. Overall, he believes this internship has showed him the importance of being concise with his work, thinking on his feet, and being personable. “At WHRO, the work environment is really guided to helping me learn and exposing me to as many things as possible.”

Meet Sara Smith, production intern for “HearSay with Cathy Lewis.” Sara attends San Diego State University, where she studies communication and marketing. At WHRO, Sara researches topics for “HearSay with Cathy Lewis” and screens phone calls for the live show. Sara hopes to pursue a career in the TV industry and applied for an internship at WHRO to get a taste of what it is like to work in the field of entertainment. As an intern, Sara believes she has built her creativity and confidence, while learning to work in the fast-paced environment of a live show. “At WHRO, I’ve learned to think outside the box and work in a fast-paced environment.”

Meet Alice Yang, a WHRO education intern and rising sophomore at Northwestern University. Focussing her work with the Batten Initiative, Alice compiles resources for teachers to use for environmental education and assists her boss, Angie Callahan, in writing grants. Her favorite part of this internship has been writing part of the grant for St. Helena Elementary School and learning how the grant will make a difference in the local community. With aspirations to be a human rights lawyer, Alice believes grant proposal writing has taught her the art of convincing other people. “I wanted to gain experience in environmental education and apply those skills to make a difference in the community.”
