NETA websiteWHRO was presented with three awards in late January at the National Educational Telecomunications Association's annual conference in Washington D,C. With over 90 public television members, the NETA award ceremony featured just 20 winners, including WGBH/Boston and Nashville Public Television. The winners were picked by a panel of judges and evaluated in the following categories: Community Engagment, Instructional Media, Content Creation and Promotion.

WHRO won in three different categories: Community Engagement, Instructional Media and Promotion, thanks to WHRO's Military Mondays, STEM education and Support What You Love programs.

WHRO's Military Mondaysan ongoing station initiative that sheds light on the many challenges veterans face coming home, won the Community Engagement award. This national project also focuses on the transitions to civilian life and the misconceptions about servicemembers, as well as civilians using their craft to connect with local veterans and make a difference in their community.

The STEM program is one of WHRO's Education programs that focuses on helping kids develop an interest in the science, technology, engineering and mathamatics fields using instructional media tools and other resources. Every so often the STEM van, decorated with various PBS KIDS characters, travels to different schools to challenge children with interactive games and presentations. Another part of the STEM program features different competitions and challenges such as the STEM Video Challenge and the Great Computer Challenge (GCC) as well as various instructional seminars like the Coding Camp.

WHRO's Support What You Love is another station intiative, that encourages its audience members to donate to WHRO. Since WHRO is public television, the entire station, television, radio, and online media programs, rely on such generous donations to support the shows, provide quality content and fund different projects throughout the Hampton Roads area. This year, thanks to countless donations, WHRO reached our fundraising goal.

From all of us at WHRO, thank you for your continuous support.
