WHRO Public Media’s colorful Literacy Van made a different type of community visit this week. Instead of giving out books to kids throughout the region during visits to schools and community centers, WHRO educators were excited to receive books — more than 100 of them!

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, PRA Group’s recently launched Black Excellence Employee Resource Group began a month-long book drive to collect books for WHRO’s literacy programs. By month’s end they had collected more than 100 children’s books that will be given away to Virginia students as WHRO educators present literacy programs across the Commonwealth.

The U.S. Department of Education has reported that children are much more likely to drop out of school in later years if they have not developed some basic reading skills by the time they enter school. That’s why one important focus for WHRO Public Media is early literacy. The WHRO Education team helps students throughout Eastern Virginia develop reading skills through our Literacy Van program, summer reading camps, and by providing books to students in communities where books are not easily accessible.

Thank you to PRA Group for your continued support!
