You’ll always have a home on Sesame Street.

According to the National Military Family Association, military families move every two or three years. When parents transition, so do their kids. This means a child in a military family could move six times during their school career. Adjusting to a new community and a new school can be quite a challenge for children.

Who better to help them make the transition than their favorite characters from a beloved children’s series? For years, Big Bird, Elmo, Bert, Ernie, and the gang from Sesame Street have been helping children learn how to count, spell, and relate to others.

From its beginning in 1969, WHRO TV has brought Sesame Street into the homes of children across Southeastern Virginia. The show that many of us grew up with celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Throughout 2019, WHRO is celebrating Sesame Street’s legacy with special community events, fun initiatives, digital campaigns and more. Along the way, we will be sharing the many ways Sesame Street impacts the lives of children and families around the world.

One creative initiative launched by Sesame Street Workshop, the nonprofit behind the children’s program, is “Sesame Street for Military Families.” Through apps, videos, and games, Sesame Street characters model how they cope with typical situations for military families—including the challenges of deployment, homecomings, injuries, and more.

The Hampton Roads area is home to one of the world’s largest populations of military personnel, with approximately 83,000 active duty military members. Through the years, we’ve heard from military families that the characters on Sesame Street, as well as those on numerous PBS Kids’ programs, are one of the unchanging factors that kids can count on as they move from community to community.

If you have family or friends in the military who have children, we encourage you to take advantage of the wealth of resources offered by Sesame Street Workshop. Find free multimedia resources and information at SesameStreetForMilitaryFamilies.org. We also hope you will join our year-long celebration of Sesame Street’s anniversary.
