WHRO wins Two Emmy's, Six Virginia Association of Broadcaster's Awards, and Four Telly's. 

Thanks to our community and donors who help make up the WHRO family, WHRO has been fortunate enough to be recognized for a number of our programs — 14 to be exact! 

Our teams in both radio and television work tirelessly to provide exceptional content focused on issues that affect Hampton Roads and have been recognized for their dedication. Below you will find a comprehensive list of our 2017 winners as well as links to their broadcasts. 

Emmy's 

WHRO won an Emmy for Guardians of Jamestown while NASA won an Emmy for their collaboration with WHRO, for Curate: Cosmic Creations

Guardians of Jamestown, Informational & Instructional Category, Winner 

2019 marks the 400th anniversary of the first representative legislative assembly in the New World. Examine this, and other 1619 events, including the arrival of the first recorded Africans to English North America, the recruitment of significant numbers of English women, the first official English Thanksgiving in North America, and the entrepreneurial and innovative spirit of the Virginia Colony.

Curate: Cosmic Creations explores art that reflects technology. Our featured 757 artist is animator Jon Levy, from AMA studios, the animation creators for NASA.

Virginia Association of Broadcaster's Awards (VAB's) 

WHRO won six VAB awards and came in second place in four categories. 

Curate, Best Documentary or Public Affairs Program Category, Winner 

The CURATE® series explores the thriving art scene in our own backyard and across America. Each week, the program features a Hampton Roads artist, along with artists from across the country, who work in a variety of mediums from painting to sculpture and photography to the spoken word. Each episode is arranged around a central theme and offers a compelling look at artists and their creations.

Curate 757: Michael TwittyBest Human Interest Series Category, Winner 

The culinary arts are one of the most enjoyable art forms around. The Cooking Gene: Michael Twitty explores art that reflects culture; we will talk with Williamsburg culinary historian and author Michael Twitty who has made it his mission to document African American food history.

Ollie the Owl Contest, Best Public Promotion / Contest (WHRO KIDS) Category, Winner 

WHRO held a contest to name our new Owl. Kids across the Commonwealth helped choose the name revealed in this video.

Melissa McLeod Legacy Testimonial, Best Station Promotion/Contest (WHRO TV) Category, Runner Up 

Melissa shares her story and reason for choosing a to donate a legacy gift to WHRO. 

Another View: Beating Bullying with William Williams, Outstanding Feature Reporting (WHRV) Category, Winner 

In a matter of weeks, he went from trying not to be noticed to taking center stage on a nationally syndicated television show! His name is William Williams, and the Granby High School sophomore recently shared with our Lisa Godley how he's used life's hard knocks to bang out a bright future! 

Afternoon Delights: Interview with Deborah Henson Contant, Outstanding Feature Reporting (WHRO) Category, Runner Up

Deborah Henson-Conant, the Grammy-nominated musician, is also a singer, storyteller, composer, and all around dynamic performer who draws her audience into a spell. Before her June 2017 show at the 2017 Virginia Arts Festival’s Norfolk Fringe, in the intimate Robin Hixon Theater, Deborah stopped by the WHRO studio for an interview about her musical path, making an instrument into your own voice, and why “dancing about architecture”

Writer's Block, Best Station Public Service/Community Event (WHRV) Category, Winner 

The WHRO Writer's Block brings together local artists who share a common bond—expressing themselves through writing. Performers include local poets and slam poets, spoken word artists, storytellers, and authors with interludes of music by some of the region’s top musicians. Topics vary from the environment and war to love and race relations. Works range from somber and thought-provoking to lighthearted and comical.

Classical Open Mic, Best Station Public Service/Community Event (WHRO) Category, Runner Up

WHRO has been hosting Classical Open Mic Nights in the community since August 2017 with the next event, Classics on The Courtyard on July 18 in Chesapeake.

Sondra Woodward, Outstanding Newscast (WHRV) Category, Winner 

Sondra never lost the itch to be on the air, however, and she’s been happily back on Hampton Roads’ airwaves at WHRV since 2004.

SoundbreakingBest Station Promotion/Contest (WHRV) Category, Runner Up

Higher Ground has partnered with TeachRock and Show of Force to create educational materials to accompany the Soundbreaking eight-part series. The related lessons are tailored for students in social studies, language arts, geography, science, and general music classes.

Telly's 

WHRO won four bronze awards at the 2018 Telly Awards. 

Curate: Wayne White: Monitor Boy, Documentary Category, Bronze 

Artist Wayne White gives us a sneak peek at his MOCA exhibit two weeks before its opening. Our 757 feature visited White who creates large-scale puppets celebrating local history.
The WHRO SpellingBee, Television General Category, Bronze

For the past 11 years, the Virginian-Pilot and WHRO have co-hosted The Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee, a regional spelling bee made of middle school students in the Hampton Roads area. Each student who won his or her school spelling bee gets a chance to participate. Every year, the winner of the Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee gets a trophy and an expense paid trip to compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
