With support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, WHRO Public Media is looking to tell stories about life in rural and smaller communities that are not being told. As part of this initiative, our producers are seeking stories of life and work on the Eastern Shore.

The Eastern Shore

The Eastern Shore of Virginia is a part of the Delmarva Peninsula and is separated from the rest of Virginia by the Chesapeake Bay. The region has more than 78,000 acres of preserved parks, preserves, refuges, and a national seashore, and it is a popular destination for fishing, boating, hiking and kayaking. The region contains six public beaches, the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and includes 70 miles of undeveloped barrier islands.

For those who live on the Eastern Shore, water is a crucial factor that impacts their lives on a daily basis. Many water-related issues faced by those in this region echo national concerns -- family livelihood, the economy, the environment, tourism and the local workforce. WHRO Public Media is looking to explore these issues through the lives of Eastern shore residents.

In exploring this unique community’s connections, challenges, and relationships with water, we hope to uncover meaningful stories that have yet to be told and shed light on the national conversations happening around these issues.
