This beautiful documentary about the making of Nourish—a new exhibition at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art—takes viewers behind the scenes, giving them an intimate look at how the featured artists conceived, created and installed their works.

The subject of Nourish is the role that food plays in our lives, not only as basic sustenance but as an essential part of cultural identity and social bonding. As a first step, the museum paired 12 artists with regional food experts—farmers, chefs nutritionists, authors and food-justice advocates—who shared their knowledge and passion to inspire artists as they went about their creative process.

The result is an exhibition that will inspire visitors to think more deeply about the cycle of food preparation—from ground to table—and the complex social issues associated with regional food culture.
