You can take an indie artist out of the south but you can’t take the south out of indie artists Julien Baker and Mackenzie Scott, otherwise known as Torres. They had similar upbringings and use that bond collaborate on the new album "Send a Prayer My Way" which has a very alt-country feel to it’s songs.
Both artists have been recording solo for about ten years, Baker is also known as one of the artists in the indie trio Boy Genius. The songs are meant to emulate the country music that influenced both of them with softly weeping pedal steel and fiddle.
Torres has raspy intensity to her voice that perfectly complements the bruised sweetness of Baker. Like great country music, their songs have a timeless romantic theme whether singing about a fondness for drinking or a love doomed by a disapproving mother.
Harkening back to 20th century traditions in country music, Julien Baker and Torres have crafted an album that pivots from the type of music they are known for and it’s their personal approach to the genre that makes "Send a Prayer My Way" sound so fresh.
