This Just In - New Releases of Timeless Music

Cantata Collective
Frank Wing
Cantata Collective

Join Raymond Jones this and every Saturday evening at 8 for “This Just In,” where you'll discover the latest and greatest in classical music releases. This week, Raymond Jones has prepared a night filled with powerful and emotional performances.

One of the highlights of the evening will be Bach’s Magnificat in D, performed by members of the Cantata Collective under the direction of Nicholas McGegan. This rendition promises to be an unforgettable experience, offering not only one of the most important works in the sacred repertoire but also a chance to witness the technical mastery and emotional depth brought to Bach’s music by McGegan and the musicians. It’s a performance that will illuminate the soul of listeners, reminding us of the profound connection music creates between the divine and the human.

Two symphonies are on tap: Christian Sinding’s Symphony No. 2 and Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, both perfect for those who appreciate the richness and complexity of orchestral music. The emotional range of these works spans from introspective moments to sweeping drama.

Sinding’s Symphony No. 2 is presented by the Capriccio label, with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra conducted by Karl-Heinz Steffens. This release offers a fascinating auditory journey that invites both reflection and emotion. In contrast, Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 is one of the most grandiose and intricate works in the symphonic repertoire. We’ll hear a stunning interpretation from the Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich, conducted by Paavo Järvi, released by Alpha Classics, in a performance that showcases the monumental depth of Mahler’s vision.

We’ll also enjoy a unique rendition of Vaughan Williams' “Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.” This special arrangement for organ and orchestra, performed on Philadelphia’s famed Wanamaker Organ, gives the piece a new dimension. Based on a theme from Psalm 2 by Thomas Tallis, Vaughan Williams’ innovative approach transforms this ancient theme into a rich, orchestral fantasy, with the majestic sound of the organ bringing out the full grandeur of the work.

Don’t miss out on these exciting classical music releases! Tune in to “This Just In" Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM 90.3 or listen online for a night full of powerful and emotional new performances.
