College Park Elementary Hosts Community Guests for African American Read-In

WHRO Public Media's radio producer and host Lisa Godley visited College Park Elementary recently to participate in their African American Read-In.

This was the third year for the annual event. School staff invited guests from the local community to share some of their favorite books by and about people of color.

Fifth graders at the school also worked on developing their leadership skills by acting as ambassadors, guiding guest readers to their assigned classrooms.

The African American Read-In is sponsored nationally by National Council of Teachers of English as an effort to encourage communities to read together, centering around African American books and authors. It was established in 1990 to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month. The initiative has reached more than 6 million participants around the world.

Godley is the Director, Equity Production and Outreach at WHRO.
