Welcoming Spring with ‘A Local Touch’

Daniel W. Boothe & Dr. Tyler Austin
Daniel W. Boothe & Dr. Tyler Austin

This Wednesday at 9:00 p.m., tune in to WHRO-FM 90.3 for a new edition of "A Local Touch – Music with a Virginia Connection," hosted by the incomparable Raymond Jones. This program will explore the classical music scene in our community with two must-hear interviews: the first with Dr. Tyler Austin from ODU and the second with Daniel W. Boothe from Symphonicity.

BHM local touch

We’ll begin the evening by highlighting the recent release of “Flutelore” from Old Dominion University’s new record label, Big Blue Records. This album features flutist Mary Matthews alongside the Newfound Chamber Winds, conducted by Dr. Tyler Austin. We’ll talk with him about this exciting project and then enjoy two flute and wind ensemble concertos: “Four Proverbs” by Cherise Leiter and “Animalis” by Nicole Chamberlain.

Next, we’ll chat with Maestro Daniel W. Boothe, director of Symphonicity, the symphony orchestra of Virginia Beach. He will share insights about the orchestra’s upcoming concert, “Sister Cities,” and we’ll listen to their performance of a suite from Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story."

As we’ll be just hours away from welcoming spring, we’ll also connect with Staunton for “Heifetz on Air” and their program “Rites of Spring,” to enjoy performances by Heifetz students playing classics like Vivaldi’s Spring, celebrating the rebirth of nature and the arrival of the season.

To conclude the program, we’ll listen to Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring,” performed by the United States Air Force Heritage of America Band from Langley. This revolutionary masterpiece captures the essence and energy of spring like no other.

Don’t miss this enriching musical evening with Raymond Jones on “A Local Touch – Music with a Virginia Connection,” this Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3 or online via the Media Player. We look forward to having you with us!
