‘This Just In’ – New Renditions of Timeless Classics

Tune in this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. for a thrilling edition of “This Just In” with Raymond Jones, your guide to the latest and most exciting classical music releases!

On this week’s program, we’ll explore a diverse mix of new recordings that will surely captivate classical music enthusiasts. From the BBC Music Magazine Collection, we will hear Brahms’s “Serenade No. 2 in A major,” conducted by Alpesh Chauhan with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. This charming and vibrant work is often seen as a bridge between Brahms' early compositions and his later, more complex, symphonic pieces. Its warmth, elegance, and lively spirit make it a perfect example of Brahms' ability to blend grace with emotional depth.

Next, we’ll dive into the “Paganini: 24 Caprices” album, recently released by Deutsche Grammophon, featuring the brilliant young Spanish violinist Maria Dueñas. In this segment, we will hear her performance of “Caprice Basque, Op. 24” by Pablo de Sarasate, a delightful piece that blends virtuosic violin technique with the flair of Basque folk music, highlighting Dueñas’s technical precision and expressive artistry.

In a special arrangement by Alain Altinoglu, we will also experience an exquisite segment from Debussy’s opera “Pelléas et Mélisande”. This concert version of the opera offers a more accessible format, bringing the beauty and emotional depth of Debussy’s original score to the stage while maintaining its rich, atmospheric quality.

And to conclude the evening, Raymond Jones will guide you through a monumental performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 “The Choral”. This recent recording, featuring the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus under the baton of JoAnn Falletta, offers a fresh interpretation of one of Beethoven’s most beloved works. With its iconic “Ode to Joy,” this rendition promises to appeal not only to lovers of Beethoven's monumental symphonic work but also to those who appreciate different takes on this universally revered masterpiece.

Join Raymond Jones for an evening filled with exciting new releases, Saturday at 8:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3 or listen online through your smart device or the WHRO Media Player. Don't miss this celebration of fresh, exciting voices in classical music!
