Tune in to WHRO-FM this Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. for a fascinating musical journey with Raymond Jones, who will take us on an exploration of the new record label launched by Old Dominion University.
This exciting new venture promises innovative musical releases, and one of its first highlighted albums is “Newfound Chamber Winds Live at Trinity Lutheran,” conducted by Dr. Tyler Austin. In an exclusive interview, Austin will provide firsthand insight into the creative process behind the album and the creation of ODU's new label, offering a unique perspective on contemporary music in the region.
Next, we will dive into a detailed listening experience of this new album, which includes Beethoven’s Wind Octet in Eb, Op. 103, Gounod’s “Petite Symphonie,” and “Does It Stretch Out Its Roots…,” a piece composed by Danielle Fisher specifically for Dr. Austin and his wind ensemble.
In honor of Women's History Month, Raymond Jones will dedicate a special segment to female conductors who have made a significant impact on classical music, and are specifically connected to Virginia.
We will hear Billye Brown Youmans conducting The Cantata Chorus & Orchestra in a performance of Haydn’s “Te Deum for Empress Maria Theresa,” recorded at the historic Christ & St. Luke's Church in Norfolk. Additionally, we will enjoy Gayle Johnson conducting the baroque ensemble Capriole in instrumental music from “The Double Dealer” by Henry Purcell.
The program continues with Rebecca Davy leading the Bruton Capella Choir of Williamsburg in a performance of “God We Gather” by Alvez Barkoskie IV, JoAnn Falletta conducting the Virginia Symphony Orchestra in an emotionally charged interpretation of a suite from the documentary “Victory at Sea” by Richard Rodgers, and Valentina Peleggi, current Music Director of the Richmond Symphony, who will take us on a musical journey with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, performing Florence Price’s Symphony No. 3.
Finally, Marin Alsop will conduct the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in “On the Waterfront: Symphonic Suite” by Leonard Bernstein, one of his most emotionally moving works, and Thea Musgrave will close the program conducting the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in a performance of her own composition “The Seasons.”
All this in a special edition of "A Local Touch" celebrating Women’s History Month, with strong ties to Virginia. Don’t miss it this Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3 and online via the Media Player.
