Escape the Winter Blues with 'En Voyage'

"April in Paris. April is in my mistress’ face. I remember April." Have you ever noticed that there are no songs about February and March? Could these be the months not of inspiration, but of ennui? How about a change of scenery to purge the winter blues? Every Friday at noon, indulge in some musical escapism with WHRO during “En Voyage”.

Some of the cities on our not-quite-spring tour have obvious musical connections – Prague Waltzes, Paris Symphony – while other locales, such as Turkey, may not leap to mind for the classical music lover. But Mozart himself will make a cameo appearance in all three of those stops.

We’ll stop in Spain on March 7. There will be Spanish madrigals and fandangos and a birthday celebration for a composer who produced much music inspired by Spain, though that was not his homeland.

The vernal equinox springs eternal in Venice on March 21 with a tribute to the season from a very famous Venetian composer. And we’ll honor some national holidays on our grand spring tour. We’ll travel to The Netherland’s for Koningsdag in April and celebrate Cinco de Mayo a few days early on May 2 with sounds from Mexico. And look! The sun is shining. We made it through the doldrums! Summer is just around the corner.

Tune in to "En Voyage" every Friday at noon on WHRO FM 90.3 or listen online through your smart device or the Media Player. Let the music take you on a journey!

Jana Lee Ross is a lifelong pianist and vocalist with a repertoire that blurs the lines between classical music and jazz. She hosts Mid-Day Classics on WHRO FM.
