‘This Just In:’ New and Exciting Releases in Celebration of Black History Month

Tune in to WHRO FM this Saturday at 8 p.m. for “This Just In,” your source for the latest classical music releases. Join Raymond Jones as he celebrates Black History Month with fresh, masterful recordings of works by African American composers like Adolphus Hailstork and Patrice Rushen.

The evening begins with Rushen’s “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory,” a powerful orchestral tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This moving work blends Rushen’s music with excerpts from Dr. King’s speeches, creating an evocative and inspiring listening experience.

Raymond Jones will also present a captivating performance of Adolphus Hailstork’s “Deep River – Rhapsody for String Quartet” by the Apollo Chamber Players, featuring violist Ashleigh Gordon. Renowned for their innovative approach to chamber music and commitment to diversity in their repertoire, the Apollo Chamber Players join forces with Gordon to deliver a dynamic and deeply moving interpretation of this powerful work.

British composer Benjamin Britten takes center stage with two works from different recordings. First, we’ll hear his String Quartet No. 2, performed by the Emerson String Quartet, followed by the second part of his ballet “The Prince of the Pagodas,” brought to life by the Hallé Orchestra.

Listeners will also be treated to Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8, performed by the Czech Philharmonic under the baton of Kahchun Wong, and they will be delighted by Brazilian composer Francisco Mignone’s Clarinet Concertino performed by the Sao Paula Symphony with soloists Ovanir Buosi.

Don’t miss these exciting new releases—tune in this Saturday at 8 p.m. for “This Just In,” only on WHRO FM 90.3. Listen live on the Media Player or through your smart device!
