Out of the Box Album of the Week--The Lumineers--Automatic

The Lumineers fifth album since their debut in 2011 is called “Automatic” an apt description for the effortless way they combine sparse arrangements with heartfelt emotions. The album features social commentary about what’s real in the world and what’s not.

With Wesley Schultz on guitar and vocals and Jeremy Fraites on piano, they use their hushed arrangements to draw attention to their songwriting skills, revealing some canny observations, hard earned insight and self-deprecating humor.

The desperation in Schultz’s voice brings out the drama in the songs and with references to modern day technology makes them hit home with more intensity.

Like lovers in a long relationship Schultz and Fraites complete each other’s musical statements on “Automatic.” They have established a sound for The Lumineers that they double down on, allowing these new songs to sound familiar and relatable.
