'This Just In' – New Classical Releases for Black History Month

Get ready for three hours of new classical releases, this Saturday at 8 p.m., on WHRO-FM as Raymond Jones brings you “This Just In.”

We are celebrating Black History Month and we’ll feature the “Rhapsodic Overture” by Edmund Thornton Jenkins, performed by the Prague Radio Symphony, conducted by Julius P. Williams. This piece is part of the album “A Legacy of the African American Spirit,” released last year by the Albany label. Williams’ interpretation emphasizes the emotional depth and lived character of this work, offering listeners a powerful sound experience.

The Navona label recently released a compilation album of Adolphus Hailstork’s chamber works, and Raymond Jones has selected “Nobody Know,” delightfully performed by the Harlem Chamber Players and baritone Kenneth Overton.

Also from 2024, the album “Rhapsody in Blue” by Thirty Tigers offers a contemporary take on George Gershwin’s famous piece. Among the various versions of this American classical masterpiece, Raymond Jones has chosen the rendition by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Eric Jacobsen, with Bela Fleck on the banjo.

The evening will close with a performance of Symphony No. 7 by Antonín Dvořák, performed by the Czech Philharmonic under the baton of Semyon Bychkov, the first act of the ballet “The Prince of the Pagodas” by Benjamin Britten with the Halle Orchestra, conducted by Kahchum Wong, and the Piano Concerto No. 1 by Emil von Sauer, performed by virtuoso Oliver Triendl with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin.

A full night of new releases – "This Just In," every Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM. Tune in to 90.3 on your radio, or listen online, and enjoy three hours of the finest musical selections.
