Ryan Speed Green, the bass-baritone born in Suffolk, is the artist that has selected this Saturday’s broadcast in the “Artist’s Choice” series of the Metropolitan Opera. Green has selected a celebrated 1960 performance of Wagner’s “Der Fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman).”
Throughout February, each Saturday, a prominent star of today’s opera world will pick one of their favorite classic performances from the Metropolitan Opera archives. Green has chosen this iconic performance featuring the renowned bass-baritone George London in the lead role of the cursed captain, doomed to sail the seas for eternity unless he finds true love.
Opposite him is soprano Leonie Rysanek as Senta, the young woman obsessed with the legend of the Flying Dutchman. The cast also includes Karl Liebl and Giorgio Tozzi, with Thomas Schippers conducting the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus.
This historic performance of “Der Fliegende Holländer” will air on Saturday, February 8 at 1:00 p.m. as part of the Robert K. Johnson Foundation-Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network, which WHRO FM 90.3 broadcasts each Saturday. Tune in or listen online through your smart device or the WHRO media player.
