Lilly Hiatt is finally in a comfortable place, and it’s making her uncomfortable. That’s the premise of her new album “Forever.” She’s the daughter of Americana legend John Hiatt and has always been stereotyped as an acoustic singer-songwriter. But on her sixth album she literally blows that thinking up with a set of reverb shrouded rockers.
Her voice and songwriting skills have always been top notch but now she’s working with her husband Coley Hinson as her producer and band leader and together they shred through nine, mostly three minute long earworms about how uncertainty can make it’s way into life no matter how contented you are.
Many of the songs are about her partner but since he’s not just her muse, he’s actually playing most of the instruments along with her, you get the feeling that they don’t need anybody else if they can sound this good together.
Her voice sounds so natural in this new musical setting that “Forever” is like discovering a totally new artist. Hiatt seems to be making the kind of noise that can drown out her problems and allow her to find a new kind of confidence and comfort.
