Don't miss this Saturday's episode of “This Just In!” Raymond Jones has handpicked a selection of recently released classical music gems, bringing them straight to your home for you to discover and enjoy. Tune in this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. and let the excitement take over.

We kick off this week's program with an album that has been nominated for "Best Orchestral Performance" at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards (2025) and also in the Symphonic Music category at the International Classical Music Awards 2025. Released in 2024 by BIS Records, “Jean Sibelius: Karelia Suite; Rakastava; Lemminkäinen” features the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Susanna Mälkki. This evening, we will enjoy one of the Finnish master's most iconic compositions: “Lemminkäinen,” a series of symphonic poems that narrate the adventures of the hero from the “Kalevala.” In this work, Sibelius masterfully blends mythology and programmatic music.

Next, we shift gears to a more dynamic and playful piece that is sure to captivate audiences with its vibrant energy: “A Fist Full of Fives” by British composer Adrian Sutton. Known for its colorful orchestration and lively rhythms, this work creates an engaging and energetic atmosphere. Its cheerful nature and infectious motifs make it a true delight to listen to, guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.

Our musical journey continues with a newly arrived treasure: a performance of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 8 by the Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Carlos Païta. This remarkable recording has been revived by French label Palais des Dégustateurs, offering a special treat for fans of the renowned Argentine maestro.

Finally, we close with a breathtaking performance from the Emerson String Quartet at Carnegie Hall, joined by virtuoso pianist Evgeny Kissin in Dvořák's Piano Quintet No. 2. Their masterful interpretation brings this beloved chamber work to life with passion and precision.

Join us this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. for “This Just In” on WHRO FM 90.3, or listen online via your smart device or the WHRO media player. Experience the best of the latest in classical music!
