World premieres and exciting rediscoveries on ‘This Just In’

Join us this Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM for “This Just In,” where Raymond Jones presents three hours of the latest classical music releases, highlighting world premieres and exciting rediscoveries.

This week’s program features a special double offering from JoAnn Falletta and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. First, we’ll showcase the world premiere recording of “City of Light” by acclaimed American composer Daron Hagen. Commissioned by the BPO, this piece celebrates Buffalo’s historic achievement as the first city in the U.S. to implement widespread electric lighting, powered by the natural wonder of Niagara Falls.

Next, we turn to “The Golden Age of Horn,” featuring Leopold Mozart’s elegant and refined “Concerto for Two Horns,” performed by BPO principal hornists Jacek Muzyk and Daniel Kerdelewicz. This delightful work highlights the brilliance and virtuosity of the classical horn tradition.

Adding to the evening’s grandeur, we’ll present a recent release of Hector Berlioz’s “Symphonie Fantastique,” conducted by the renowned Carlos Païta with the London Symphony Orchestra. Originally recorded in 1978 and winner of the prestigious Grand Prix du Disque, this performance has long been a collector’s item and is now available once again thanks to Palais des Degustateurs.

Chamber music lovers will delight in Johannes Brahms’ introspective Cello Sonata No. 1, performed by cellist Emanuel Gruber and pianist Arnon Erez. This thoughtful and sensitive interpretation, newly released by Bridge Records, offers an intimate glimpse into Brahms’ compositional mastery.

We’ll also hear the charming “Victorian Kitchen Garden Suite” by Paul Reade, featuring a new flute arrangement performed by Philippa Davies with the English Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Robin O’Neill.

Finally, we are excited to present the world premiere recording of Spanish composer Conrado del Campo’s String Quartet No. 8. Del Campo is one of the most original but least well-known Spanish composers of the first half of the twentieth century and deserves a place in the chamber music repertoire.
